| | "Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro" - Utada Hikaru | ] | So Ann and I just watched eps 35 and 36 of FMA. Um. o_o I have three thoughts about episode 35 (which hopefully aren't too spoilerific for people's tastes):
1) Whoa, Lust characterization. I am impressed. 2) The Fossil Disease is creepy as fuck. *shudder* 3) Oh look, Koyasu is whoring himself out againmaking a guest appearance. This amuses me, though of course it meant I couldn't take his character seriously from the moment he appeared. XD
(In other seiyuu news, go take a look at who's going to be playing Armstrong's family in the next episode. They're at the bottom of the list. I will be SO entertained. XD)
Episode 36 felt, at least to us, as if continuity had just taken a screeching turn around a sudden corner, and made us realize that there's a lot of smaller details from previous episodes that we've forgotten. The 'problem' with FMA is that, despite the strength of its overarching plot, it still makes a very entertaining episodic series, and it's easy to get caught up by those individual episodes and forget what's been going on and building up before. I think, once this series is over, we have to watch it all over again to catch everything. :P
Also, Ann has an interesting theory of the Amestris/Ishbal people being, not Western/Muslim, as we'd been hypothesizing, but rather German/Jewish. I'll leave all the fun little parallels for her to share ...
And oh! I cooked dinner tonight, all by myself. Only fried rice, but hey -- I made a meal without getting anyone sick, and the kitchen was in decent shape when I was done. I am unduly pleased by this. ^_^ Only a matter of months before I inflict my cooking on the rest of you guys, hah. |

Considering the strong parallels to Germany that Amestris seems to have, and also, as I mentioned to Ann, in the manga there's mentions of the end of a "civil war"--which might've been Ishbar they were talking about (it's shown during the big flashback in v6, just before Ed and Al try to resurrect their mother)--given that in the anime, Archer is now trying to start a SECOND war, it could very well work out that way.
Just wait'll you see ep37. XD Ann told me about the seiyuu discovery, which I hadn't caught the first time I watched it, but ... once I KNEW, OMGWTF I DIED LAUGHING. XD
The only thing that would have been more amusing would be if Paku Romi played Catherine -- but of course, when I try to picture *that* I have visions of Ed trying to look cute in a dress and pretending to be Armstrong's sister. And Havok having a crush on him. XD;;
About the civil war thing -- have we been told whether or not the Ishbar were native to Amestris and were exiled, or if they were an immigrant population and always 'outsiders'? I realized last night that I couldn't remember hearing anything about that in the anime.
From what I remember (after having watched episodes 1-22 in one day here with my friends on Monday), they call the Ishbar a very small singular "tribe" with one city. From what I remember.
Yeah, I thought it was really interesting. Baring Greed (which is one of the many reasons I like him) the Sins haven't really shown much in the way of emotions besides "evil" and "amused that I am evil". Lust had OTHER EMOTIONS, and it was great. Very interesting that she can remember things. And yes, the slate disease is fucking creepy.
36 felt like they were trying really hard to make us laugh. The last two episodes were the episodes of death, now LOOK! ED IS BEING HIT ON THE HEAD AND MAKING A FUNNY FACE! ISN'T THAT FUNNY? YOU'RE LAUGHING, RIGHT?
But I still enjoyed it. Sadly, I find that my dislike of Roy grows exponentially everytime he's on screen. I'm not sure what he did. Me and a guest watched ALL of FMA in one day, and I checked; I'm still not sure what, exactly, he ever did to me, but lately I find that I don't like him so much.
And you're right about the plot.
Very true. Envy, too, has given us flashes of characterization (by which I mean Serious Mental Issues, but hey, that's characterization too). Wrath has potential, and now so does Lust. I don't know what you can really do with Gluttony, but Sloth at least is prime for some serious fleshing out, and I hope they deliver.
Does Roy bother you because of what he did during the war, or just that he's an arrogant prick now? ^_^; As for me, it's actually my opinion of Hawkeye that's changing. I really thought her speech in ep. 36 was interesting; it made me less sure that I like her, but more certain that I respect her. If that makes sense. :P
Really wish I could see episodes beyond 34. :-( But watching episodes 1-22 in one day made me respect Roy more than I had been. *shrugs*
I don't mind the war stuff; it was war. I think it is that he's an arrogant prick. And I'm sure he's got some master plan or whatever but still: Prick.
And you know, I never really liked Roy that much to begin with. I remember before I watched the show everyone being OMGROY and then I sat there being like "Okay...he's alright...but when is he gonna start being a badass?"
*shrug* Roy just does not equal mr. hotstuff in my book, I guess. ^^
